Hostellerie de la Sainte-Baume

On the Plan-d'Aups plateau, facing the forest and the cliff, the Hostellerie de la Sainte-Baume is the sanctuary's house of welcome. Father Lacordaire had it built in the middle of the 19th century from an old farm, at the same time as he brought the Dominican friars back to the foot of the grotto, on 22 July 1859. The Dominicans of the Toulouse province now run it entirely.

Staying

The house has 180 beds in single rooms, doubles and dormitories, including 63 rooms and 49 beds in the Saint-Joseph hostel, four rooms accessible to people with reduced mobility and a restaurant of about 200 seats. The rhythm is that of a religious house, with meals at set times; the welcome is for passing pilgrims as much as for families, hikers and groups on retreat or attending a course.

What to see on site

The so-called François Ier gateway has been a listed historic monument since 1979. The Latin-cross chapel is decorated with five large canvases by Frédéric Montenard painted between 1911 and 1913, and the Saint-Dominique oratory, from 1970, is the work of the architect Thomas Gleb. From the Hostellerie car parks start the chemin des Roys to the grotto, the sentier Merveilleux and the climb to the Saint-Pilon.
